Previcox Emails
"Maggie" Merial Case # 09-914-01 Mel, We lost Maggie, our 6 yr old Shih Tzu on Sept 1, 2009. She was prescribed Previcox due to arthris in rear hip and we were to give her 1/2 of the 57mg tablet daily. She weighed 15lbs. She started taking it on 8/22/09 and passed away on 9/1/2009. She started having diarrhea the night before and all the next day. We took her to the vet at 4:00 that afternoon. She started bleeding from her rectum while at the vets and he said not to be alarmed, it looked worse than what it was. He then gave her Sucralfate, and an injection of IM/SQ and told us she had colitis probably from the Previcox. He stated the meds he had just given her should act as a bandage and stop rectum bleeding, and that she was showing no signs of dehydration, to carry her home and if she would not eat or drink by morning to bring her back and they would give her an IV for a day and she should be fine. She continued bleeding from rectum and died 5 hours after we carried her home. We called vet the next morning to see if he could maybe tell us what happened. He stated she probably got into something that she should not have (You mean like PREVICOX?~Mel) such as spoiled food or maybe smelling another dogs poop in yard that may have been infected with something, etc. He said it had nothing to do with the previous meds she was on. What do you think? I have read all your website page but nothing tells me the symptoms the dogs had before they passed. She was not vomiting, just rectal bleeding. Any ideas, as you know we are heartbroken. Maggie was our entire life and to lose her so suddenly at a young age is killing us. I went to the Merial website to get a claim # but cannot get in. By the way, the vet also told me on the phone after her death, that they had 3 other cases similar to Maggie's in the past weeks and all the dogs had died--- sounds strange to me. She was treated all her life at the Animal Clinic in Lewisburg TN. Thanks, Taleah P. |
