Just read your story about Rowdy and my husband and I can identify with your grief. On Saturday morning (11/15/08) we buried our beloved 8-yr-old Rottweiler “Goliath” after a nightmarish 2-3 days.

Three weeks ago he was diagnosed with severe osteoarthritis and hip dysplasia - just two weeks ago the doc prescribed Previcox (1-1/2 pills per day at first – then increased to 1 pill twice a day after a bad falling spell a few days later).

In less than two weeks, Goliath lost 8 pounds, but did not seem noticeably different until Thursday 11/13, at which time he began projectile vomiting immediately after digesting a pill (I stopped the pills immediately, but the vomiting continued for the next 3+ hours). He also began lapping up water like crazy, until the vet asked us to take away his water for the night 11/14 and just give him ice chips to help control the vomiting, then bring him in the next morning.

That night was a nightmare as Goliath vomited and searched for water, finally throwing his 125-pound body into the bathtub in search of it (I gave it to him then – forget the vet’s advice!). The next morning, the vet advised us that Goliath’s pulse was weak, he was panting heavily, he had lost 8 pounds, and although she could put him in the hospital, due to his age and condition it would probably not help at this point.

We opted to end his suffering that morning, although it hasn’t ended ours. He was actually doing better BEFORE we took him to the vet, he stumbled and fell at times, but at least he could eat and was happy and active! I received flyers and pamphlets from the vet, but it was mostly advertising – nothing warning us about potential side effects like this.
