We just buried Bruno, our 2 year old Shar-Pei. He was in top shape except for a slight knee injury. The vet put him on Previcox for 1 week.

Then we took him in for a knee exam. He was given Telazol for anesthesia. When we went to pick him up 2 hrs. later he was not okay. He kept going down hill.
4 days later he died.

Dear Mel,

Thank you so much for getting back to me. Here's Bruno. Can you add him to the list of wonder dogs who have passed on? As we piece this together I become more torn up inside. We unknowingly killed our totally healthy dog.

On 05/05/09...he was prescribed...Previcox/half a tab a day (1 Previcox - 227mg)
1 Heartguard Plus Green (which I now come to find out messes with their immune systems which in Shar-Pei's are very fragile)

On 05/14/09...he was given .50 Telazol IV per cc - Cani*
(we did not give him Previcox on this day or on the days following 'cause he was going down so fast)

Vet #1 (who Bruno saw first) really pushed the drugs. He was not on any flea/tick medication. And no heartworm meds either until this fateful visit. I got pressed into giving it to him from a place of fear. My total bad. (I had totally forgotten about this "til I read what your site had to say about heartworms.)

We went to Vet #2 'cause Bruno was going down so fast and Vet #1 never returned our calls for a day and a half. Vet #2 got him on IV Fluid (dextrose, reglan), Hetastarch colloid fluid therapy 500 ml, Dexamenthasone inj., Vitamin K inj., Baytril 100mg inj., Ampicillin inj., Famotidine inj.

Vet.#2 also did the necropsy. They found no cause of death. Organs in top shape, no infection, no tick born diseases. No obvious cause of death, would suspect
DIC, sepsis, toxicity.

I am heartsick.

Mahalo,
Barbara B.

And thank you so much for the site you created...
