My dog Scarlett recently died from
what the autopsy revealed was a
deep stomach ulcer. My vet said that its
positioning was such that its unlikely it would be
visible via xrays (which he did do b/c he suspected a
liver issue).
I took Scarlett to the vet b/c she
began limping and avoiding putting weight on her front
leg. She allowed me to touch the leg / paw, and
the vet could only find soreness when he touched her
elbow. He did xrays of both legs - they had
no apparent arthritis or
fractures - and so he
prescribed her a 57mg daily dosage of Previcox.
Scarlett began taking the pills on
2/20 and at first I thought her lethargy was a general
reaction to the medicine. As she appeared to get
worse - heaving labored breathing, increased water
consumption, lack of interest in food, seemed feverish,
little to no energy - I called the vet and discontinued
the meds, but she had already
taken 5 of the pills. She was given another
pain medicine (Tederol?) but became even more lethargic
and had 2 vomitting episodes.
I took her back to the vet who put
her on an IV for fluids / antibiotics. He found an
elevated white count in her
bloodwork but again nothing to pinpoint the
issue. I took her home with several antibiotics and
special food, but after another evening of heavy
breathing/panting/water intake she died in the morning.
Scarlett was never the same after
her first dose of the Previcox, and after doing a search
I found your website and emails from other owners.
She was only
about 6 years old; I only had her 4 years and
should have had several more quality years with her.
Thank you for your website and the
information on it.
Sincerely,
Jen R.
